Album Review

Derek has musical sensitivity in spades, as instrumentalist, vocalist and composer, amply evidenced in
Nevertheless, an instrumental album composed and recorded during lockdown. On the sleeve notes he
quotes a most appropriate observation by Neil Peart, late drummer with rock band, Rush: “If a piece of
work was an honest expression of its maker, it was also a milestone of his progress and a benchmark to
build upon in the future.”
This new project is all these things. With a debut album and several EPs already, this is Derek’s first fully
instrumental work, truly a thing of beauty, reflecting and expressing his diverse musical influences and
experience.
From glorious rhythms and dancefloor hooks to gorgeous gentle melodies on acoustic guitar, from
harmonically rich pieces with more than a hint of classical flavour to atmospheric soundscapes
transporting you to undersea worlds or Italian movies.

Ok, so what’s this album all about then?

It’s really just the result of my lockdown experience and the focus that gave me to finish off all the many half-baked ideas that needed a home. I really enjoy writing songs but the freedom of not having to worry about lyrics and just concentrate on the mood of a piece and arrangement was very uplifting and satisfying. It was also a challenge to record it myself ( with help from a couple of trusted mentors!) making my own decisions good or bad on the mix and overall production.

Lockdown?

Nevertheless music must continue…..

House Concert. Armadale Skye

”Well a truly great end to Pam and Rick’s Travelling house concerts. The last one of the season was a blinder ! Derek Urquhart and Marc Clement, in a spectaclar venue in Armadale, playin’ n’ singin’, great craic, great songs, fantastic harmonies, 2 lifelong friends just doing what this uncaring world should let them do more of. It was a privilege to be there. I’m a bit full of love for them, so best I stop now.x ”
